Ex-manager A.J. Hinch: Astros' 2022 World Series championship 'really cool' to see
A.J. Hinch managed plenty of players on this year's Astros championship team before he was fired in January 2020.SAN DIEGO — A.J. Hinch fell short of the finish line in his final act as Astros manager. Watching many of the same players cross it last month left him proud.
“There's a lot of relationships that have developed over time. Seeing their faces and their joy, for them, personally, I think is really cool,” Hinch said on Tuesday at the winter meetings. “Clearly my relationships with a lot of people in the organization and around the organization remain super positive.”
Following the gutting Game 7 loss to Washington in 2019, Houston owner Jim Crane fired Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow amid fallout from the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal. The Detroit Tigers hired Hinch as their manager after he served a one-year suspension in 2020. Hinch has stayed close to some of his former Astros players and has many members of his final coaching staff still working for Dusty Baker. Of the 26 players on Houston’s World Series roster, 15 played for Hinch during his final season in 2019 — one that fell so painfully short of its final goal.
“I'm proud of them,” Hinch said. “It's hard to get to the finish line. I've been part of one that got to the finish line. I've been part of one that didn't and a couple near-misses. Winning the World Series is hard. And a lot of friends still there.”
