Houston family advises audience 'Do your research' after finding long-lost relatives of a former slave
which centered on helping families of former enslaved persons who were disconnected after emancipation.
“When she started telling me about her ancestor and the documentary I thought we have to get this out there, so I took her on a tour,” Blacklock-Sloan said. “He was so young when he was sold into slavery, and for him to live such a rich life makes me lost for words,” Jenkins said. “I’m amazed and proud that he didn’t give up because he could have given up. We don’t know what he went through.”
Davis believes she traced her great-grandfather to South Carolina in the 1800’s, but his trail disappeared. Information is limited. She only knows his name, not his age, birth date or date of death.An overgrown cemetery on private land near West Point, between Smithville and La Grange, is where her grandmother is buried. “I feel a sense of connection,” she said of the place. Davis knows her grandmother lived in West Point. She found a newspaper clipping that notes her death at age 101.
