‘A House Made Of Splinters’: First Footage Of Sundance Doc About Ukrainian Orphanage From ‘Flee’ & ‘The Act Of Killing’ Producers
Directed by Simon Lereng Wilmont, whose last film was shortlisted for an Oscar, the intimate feature follows three children who are temporarily removed from their parents but find friendship and flickers of hope inside the worn walls of an orphanage in eastern Ukraine. The movie charts how a group of dedicated social workers create moments of joy and respite from childhoods all but lost.
Director Simon Lereng Wilmont said: “I hope to bring attention not just to the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine but to the long term, less visible effects it is having on children and their families living in the region. With this film I wanted to show the heartbreaking consequences together with the friendships and resilience these kids have.”
