A Haunting In Venice is Branagh’s third time playing the brilliant detective after Murder On The Orient Express and Death On The Nile. A Haunting In Venice is the first time Christie’s novel Hallowe’en Party has been adapted to the big screen and Branagh’s first time directing a Hercule Poirot movie. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for A Haunting In Venice, Pritchard discussed working with Branagh. He explained how Branagh and writer Michael Green have added new elements to Hercule Poirot in each movie. He also teased how impacted Hercule Poirot will be by the events of A Haunting In Venice. Check out Pritchard’s full quote below: James Pritchard: I think one of the things that Ken and Michael Green, the writer, have brought to these films is a kind of depth to Poirot that possibly isn't in there in the books. In Death On The Nile, for instance, they actually go into a backstory which is an invention of Michael and Ken's. They kind of go through his first World War experiences and actually sort of use that to show where the mustache came from. But I think what they add to what I would say is my great grandmother's stories is a kind of an analysis and investigation of Poirot. And they are allowing Poirot to develop both in the films and throughout the series. So this film, you see Poirot starts, he's retired, he seems to do a lot of retiring Poirot but anyway, he's retired and then you get Ariadne Oliver taking him out of his retirement, taking him out of his shell again. And you see him move through the case. He is in a very different place at the end than he is at the beginning. I think that is one of the charms of what Ken and Michael are bringing to the character Poirot and bringing to my great grandmother's work. A Haunting In Venice Adds A New Layer To Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot While each installment has revealed new elements of Hercule Poirot, including Pritchard's example from Death On The Nile, this new movie could be the most insightful yet, not only for the character himself but for Branagh’s interpretation of him. Branagh is pulling double duty with this movie as both the star and director, which means this is more fully his vision of Hercule Poirot than ever before. He can focus on the elements of the character he finds most intriguing. This is the third time Branagh has played Hercule Poirot, which gives him unique insight into this character and how such a unique situation will impact him. While Hercule Poirot has been unexpectedly thrust into a case before, this one has an added layer of superstition and the possibility of the paranormal. Hercule Poirot, like any good detective, is inherently skeptical, which is what first draws him into this mystery when he learns of a medium touting an ability to speak with the dead. The added element of a haunted house on Halloween night may force him to examine his own beliefs, depending on what he experiences while trying to solve the case. A Haunting In Venice also stands out because it is based on a Christie novel that has never been adapted. This allows Branagh the freedom to dig into elements of the mystery and Hercule Poirot that have never been explored before. It is an excellent opportunity to drop Hercule Poirot into a completely new situation with supernatural and horror elements at the forefront. Branagh can balance the two genres and his deepening understanding of the character like never before as he helms A Haunting In Venice both on and offscreen.
