A global perspective on youth voter participation in the United States paid civicnation

At home, I am a registered member of a political party that has experienced major political upheaval in recent years. That includes the impeachment crisis of former president Park Geun-Hye which eventually led to a snap election in 2017. It seems discussions of impeachment are a familiar topic in presidential democracies these days.

One influential factor may be that South Korea has automatic voter registration. Every citizen in South Korea is required to register for a government issued ID when they turn 18, which they can use as a voter ID for all elections. Casting a ballot is as easy as bringing their ID to their polling place on election day.

The presidential impeachment crisis in 2016, and the subsequent snap election in 2017, served to motivate South Korean young people even more, providing youth with a notion of self-citizenship, that voting matters and can change society for the better. Young South Koreans were angered when it came to light that former president Park Geun-hye was relying heavily on a personal friend in making presidential decisions, effectively delegating power to an unelected stranger.
