George Reed, who died Sunday at age 83, made the Roughriders \u002D and Saskatchewan \u002D better.
George Reed’s CFL career was barely 30 minutes old when a battering ram hit his face, on purpose., after a strong and stoic life — moved to Saskatchewan from Washington State University in 1963, and quickly mingled his blood, skin and sweat with the soil that underpins this province. He gave his body to the Saskatchewan Roughriders and to the people who live here, every inch of it — ligaments, bones, brain and face.
“The Man physically is wounded, but somewhere inside of him there is a rare kind of a gut instinct that will not let him quit. To him, quit is a four-letter word meaning loser. Now, there is nothing left to get hurt.” The closest Reed got to leaving was in 1969, when Denver made him a strong offer. But he was working for Molson’s on the side, and the money difference — $5,000 — wasn’t enough for him to leave Saskatchewan, especially since the Broncos wouldn’t give him the two-year, no-cut contract he asked for.
