A pretty big lizard, suspected to be Nile monitor, is captured in the backyard of a Lake County home.
A wildlife officer and a police officer capture what's believed to be a Nile monitor found Thursday in the backyard of a home in Willoughby .WILLOUGHBY, Ohio — This is not what you expect to find when you venture into your backyard, at least not in Northeast Ohio .
Willoughby police were called to a home Thursday when a resident was startled to find a giant reptile in the backyard. Police said in a post on social media it’s believed to be a Nile monitor. The Nile monitor usually is found in sub-Saharan Africa, not in Lake County., they are the largest lizard species in Africa. Adults can grow to 6.5 feet in length and weigh nearly 18 pounds, but they average about 5 feet in length and 15 pounds.
“Since this was a new one for us, we had to make several phone calls,” police say. “We wanted to make sure Norman was handled properly and cared for.” Police believe the lizard is someone’s pet, but it’s not clear if it escaped or if it had been released. Police say the owner should contact the Herps Alive Foundation in South Euclid.
