/Gray News) - An oversized baseball card honoring Willie Mays was unveiled Tuesday in Alabama as part of an effort to honor different Black baseball players.
Each stop on the tour featured an oversized baseball trading card of a different Negro Leagues Legend.The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute was the last stop on FOX Sports and Fanatics tour across the country. The Tuesday event featured an oversized baseball card designed by former MLB player and artist Micah Johnson, honoring Mays.“Willie Mays started here at the Birmingham Black Barons at just 16 years old,” Sami Polanco, manager of brand and partnership marketing at Fox Sports said.
“There’s just so much that we need to honor and be a part of, and I think this was … we’d be remiss not to be here in Birmingham for a game celebrating the Negro Leagues,” Polanco said. “There are so many great legends that came from this field.” “The Negro Leagues were the reason why a lot of plays and records were made that unfortunately had not been established in our record,” she said.
