World No. 1 Iga Swiatek will meet Ons Jabeur in Saturday’s U.S. Open women’s final in a stark clash of styles
under the pressure of Centre Court. On Thursday, she was hoping to advance to her second Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open—and this time, she would have to knock out the hottest player on tour to do it, France’s Caroline Garcia.
“Obviously, nerves were there,” said Garcia, a two-time major champion in doubles, but never a finalist in the singles. “I think it’s pretty normal. You know, when I started the tournament in my first round, I was stressed out already.” Those mistakes meant that Jabeur was able to get away with putting just 43% of her first serves in the court. No matter, she figured. It was enough to give her a second crack this year at becoming the first-ever Grand Slam champion from Africa. On her first try in July, she was thwarted by Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina.
“I feel like my level of trust should be for sure higher,” Swiatek said. “Here I just try to accept maybe that sometimes I’m not going to trust myself, and I still need to prove myself in a couple of matches maybe against heavy hitters to see how it’s going to go.”
