A federal eviction moratorium protecting millions ends today. Renters in these states are most at risk
Temporary moratoriums and other protections currently in place in Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, New York and Washington are also set to expire before the end of August.
A number of states, including California, Illinois and New Jersey, have opted to keep moratoriums in place until their public health emergency or state of emergency declarations have ended. The timing of the moratorium’s expiration makes it particularly daunting for Americans hit hard by the pandemic. Coronavirus cases continue to rise rapidly across the U.S.
on the federal eviction ban to stop a “looming eviction crisis,” but no action has been taken so far. “This is a potential catastrophe,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in an appeal to the GOP. “Twenty-two million households report not having the ability to pay next month’s rent and millions will be faced with evictions for past months mispayments unless Congress acts.”The CARES Act has protected 12.
Landlords in parts of the country without moratoriums have already begun evicting tenants at pre-pandemic rates, according to a from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. The Eviction Lab highlights the fact that evictions disproportionately impact majority Black and Latinx neighborhoods, which remains true for coronavirus-era evictions.
