Danny Ortiz made baseball history for the Mile Square City.
Buddy Matthews, former baseball coach at Hoboken High School, left, and his star pitcher, Danny Ortiz, get together recently at the Coach House Diner.
The last group to come to Hoboken the 1950s and ‘60s were of Hispanic origin, mostly from the island of Puerto Rico, 1,625 miles away. Rents in Hoboken were more affordable than New York City. Smokestack industries like Tootsie Roll, Maxwell House and Lipton Tea supplied incomes as did the many small seamstress shops.
Ortiz’s mom and dad came to Hoboken around 1964-65. Mom was a seamstress and dad worked in various factories. Their three boys — Edwin, Jose and Danny — were drawn to baseball through Connors School and Troys Little League. Danny, the youngest, started to bloom as a Mile-Square Hoboken baseball star and finally came to be known at Hoboken High School as one of the best left-handed pitchers under coach Buddy Matthews, whose county and state championships are too many to mention.
