Anchorage School District Superintendent Dr. Jharett Bryantt said that ASD is in a “dire situation” as they attempt to close the $100 million deficit in the 2025-2026 budget.

ASD Superintendent said the situation is"dire" considering the district's budgetANCHORAGE, Alaska - Anchorage School District Superintendent Dr. Jharett Bryantt said ASD is in a “dire situation” as they attempt to close the $100 millionBryantt said much of the problem comes from the fact that the State “Base Student Allocation” has adjusted for inflation, only seeing a single $30 increase since 2017. The allocation currently sits at $5,960.

“Over 10 years, that adds up and a lack of willingness to solve the root cause,” he said. “Which is lack of inflation adjustment for the base student allocation is hurting not just ASD, but essentially any district that you can name statewide.” In the past, the State has granted one-time payments to schools, but Bryantt said those payments are not guaranteed, and because they are usually announced after the district budget is passed, they are unable to budget for them., which has been introduced in an attempt to increase the BSA. These proposed increases have been denied in the past, but Bryantt is hopeful.

Aside from the topic of budget deficits, Bryantt briefly discussed the topic of law enforcement, specifically federal immigration enforcement, within ASD schools. Earlier this week, Bryantt“There have been no attempts from federal officials to enter our schools for the purpose of immigration enforcement,” Bryantt said. “This is really just to underscore what’s on the communities' minds. We had received quite a few calls from parents that are really scared and nervous for various reasons.
