Biosensors could be the key to ensuring effective disease surveillance mechanisms. But do public health concerns justify privacy violations?

COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic in March 2020. The unprecedented outbreak of the viral disease exposed shortcomings of public health management systems the world over. Countries across the globe implemented drastic measures, ranging from quarantines and social-distancing protocols to border closures and to curb the spread of the virus.

Infectious disease surveillance is a key epidemiological tool for monitoring diseases, identifying outbreaks, and detecting emerging pathogens. These efforts can rely on traditional forms of surveillance as well as innovative approaches, such as mobile apps and other combination of digital tools., there are more than 200 known types of zoonoses. It is estimated that approximately 60% of emerging infectious diseases reported worldwide are zoonoses.

These pandemics, according to N-jonaam Mahama, pointed to several key shortcomings, such as delayed detection, and inadequate response mechanisms. He said that the 2019 coronavirus pandemic also highlighted several gaps.

In his opinion, population screening studies require appropriate statistical sampling of communities to ensure early monitoring of disease outbreaks or local epidemics. “That requires local health authorities to use sensor tools with the appropriate administrative approach, and communities really need to cooperate in conducting population-wide screenings or at least sampling-scale efforts,” he stated.
