A deadly robbery in Montgomery has left the Hispanic community feeling vulnerable and desperate for answers. MONTGOMERY , Ala. - Montgomery ’s Hispanic community is still reeling over the deaths of three men during aCentral Alabama CrimeStoppers Hispanic liaison Felix Montelara said several Hispanic -owned businesses have been robbed over the last few months but have not gotten answers.Tipico de Mexico owner Jose Vasquez said many community members fear for their lives.
“Most of my employees are afraid to come in,” Vasquez said. “We’re shorthanded because of what they did before.” Despite the city assuring that victims would be treated fairly regardless of immigration status, Montelara said some of the Hispanic community is weary of law enforcement. “They believe that maybe the MPD or the sheriff’s department may act as an ICE agent and extradite them or take them back home or do whatever they do with them,” Montelara said.
Montelara added crime victims should not take matters into their own hands, encouraging them to allow the justice system to “work” in their favor.Copyright 2024 WSFA. All rights reserved.
