Prince Albert II, the Sovereign Prince of Monaco, was first appointed regent in 2005 after his father fell ill, before ascending the throne a week later, on 6 April 2005. The son of Prince Ranier III and actor, Grace Kelly, he is the head of the Princely House of Grimaldi, and in accordance with the Constitution and laws, exercises his authority. He retains executive power over all legislation proposed by the National Council.

Albert, an athlete in his youth, competed in the bobsleigh at five consecutive Winter Olympics for Monaco, and met South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock in 2000 at the Mare Nostrum swimming meet in Monaco. The couple were married on 1 July 2011 and went on to welcome twins, Prince Jacques, Hereditary Prince of Monaco, and Princess Gabriella, Countess of Carladès, on 10 December 2014, making Jacques the heir apparent to the throne.
