A local broker saw the potential in a neighborhood Italian restaurant and made it uniquely hers.
The house at 264 Waverly is the last of McSherry’s homes across the neighborhood that she poured herself into. Over the course of her career, which began in 1979, she ended up selling 400 homes in Clinton Hill and Fort Greene — including one to Joe Klein, whoMagazine about the feeling of being “hooked” by her. “She came over here back in the day, when there were boarded-up houses,” recalled her friend and neighbor, writer and designer DK Holland. McSherry didn’t just sell the homes.
The 19th-century carriage house includes a private garage. McSherry drove clients to see potential homes, and legend has it that she knew the location of every hydrant in the neighborhood — her preferred location for an illegal spot. McSherry built the kitchen in a nook of the former Italian restaurant’s industrial kitchen, keeping some elements — like a butcher block and icebox. Her beloved Chambers stove is pale blue.
McSherry used the largest of the four bedrooms as her own, sleeping beneath one of her many vintage signs. The ground-floor sitting room is built around a woodburning fireplace original to the carriage house.
