With the U.S. Department of Transportation encouraging states to use existing authority to “flex” formula funds to transit projects, Murphy should be canceling enlargements planned for the Turnpike and other roads in favor of transit upgrades like bus garages, rail station platforms, and overhead wire.

I and many others have called attention towith coordination, prioritization, and cost control. Federal policies make transit harder to build and run than it should be.
Still, as New Jersey’s top public official, Murphy — more than just about anyone else in the state — is responsible for formulating cogent answers to the questions of how to build and run transit that lots of people will use. So far, he has apparently contented himself with arresting decline and expects others to throw money at the underlying issues.
The governor had no problem getting President Biden’s ear when it came to slowing down congestion pricing over Rep. Josh Gottheimer’s obsession with double tolling of a small, wealthy minority of drivers. Surely, he can press the president and the Northeast’s Senate delegation to find Amtrak board members and executives who want to do something about
