The Cleveland Public Library recently helped launch a citywide challenge to get residents to read a million books or a million minutes in 2023, as a way to encourage connectivity and increase literacy.
Other titles, such as “Verity” and “It Ends with Us,” by Colleen Hoover, had some of the longest waiting lists – about 4,000 each – indicating that they could have easily made the list had there been enough copies available to keep pace with reader interest.
“Anything to kind of escape does really well,” Flinn said. “Lists of books that have won prizes are great, but I think those aren’t the things people are clamoring for.” Roughly 83,000 library users are aged 18 and under, demographic information shows. The largest population of users is adults between 19 and 64 years old – 171,000 patrons – and the smallest is seniors 65 and older – 27,000 patrons.
Some of the rebound Flinn attributes to the increasing interest in eBooks, which can be downloaded and read on a device, and eAudio books, which you listen to through the Libby app. Where there were 56,000 physical books checked out in October, e-media was downloaded 67,000 times, she said.
