During this season of giving, it is worth remembering that Franklin and the other founders did, in fact, give the world a great gift.
The American experiment in representative democracy was the epitome of what great thinkers had in mind dating back to Plato himself. But like most things of great value, there is a price to pay for keeping our gift safe and effective.
So, what happens when a domestic threat comes in the form of our own Chief Executive who simply ignores his oath, his duty to the Constitution and to the cherished tradition of the peaceful transfer of power. The answer is contained in the original assertion of our freedom from the English throne. Another great gift that was bestowed on America this year was the affirmation that citizens can and will act to assure order and reason in even the most raucous political environments. The mid-term elections showed that voters can see through the posturing – even when it is driven by millions of dollars of dark money. The people themselves chose to reset America’s focus in an effort to tamp down inflammatory demagoguery.
The Confederacy believed that history and God Himself favored the South. Lincoln chose to confront the nation’s “original sin” of slavery and the fracturing of the country head on. The conflict that ensued would take hundreds of thousands of lives and push the nation to the edge of oblivion.
