Richard Liu, JD .com’s billionaire founder and a major celebrity in China, may soon face a rape accusation (which he denies) in a U.S. court. It’s already been hotly debated on Chinese social media for months by rachsandl

As the world would later find out, that man was billionaire JD.com founder Richard Liu, 46, a celebrity in his own right, as one of theand most powerful businessmen in China. He told police he had consensual sex with the woman and that she “enjoyed” it. The woman, a 21-year-old Chinese international student named Liu Jingyao, who had never even planned to contact police, would eventually accuse him of rape and suddenly be thrust onto an international stage to be both championed and scrutinized.

Once inside the restaurant, she later told police, someone directed her to sit next to Richard Liu while her friend was ushered to a separate table. Over the course of the dinner, she told police, she felt pressured to drink during a series of toasts or else she would “lose face,” or lose respect from the men at the table. She said Richard Liu whispered in her ear and invited her on his private jet. At some point, her friend left.

Images from security footage that captures Richard Liu walking with Liu Jingyao inside her apartment building. When they got to Liu Jingyao’s apartment, security camera footage shows the two walking with linked arms up to her door. According to Liu Jingyao, she thought Richard Liu was only helping her walk to her door, but he followed her inside and attempted to take off her clothes. He eventually relented and went to the bathroom to take a shower, she said.

“He dragged me to the vehicle. He started to molest me while we were in the vehicle. Then I begged him not to. Now you know. However, I don’t want to be his mistress. I just want to escape,” a text to her boyfriend in China reads. The texts were written in Chinese, but English translations were released to the public by police."I beg you. I will try my best to escape. I beg you beg you not to call the police.

A confusing, and unorthodox, series of events followed. At first she told officers she was raped, but moments later she changed her mind, saying she wasn't raped and that she was concerned she might get in trouble in China. The police, thinking she had decided not to accuse him of rape, let Richard Liu go.
