'We want the families that are in detention and who have been separated to know we haven't forgotten them,' Families Belong Together Chair Jess Morales Rocketto said.

Washington woke up Tuesday to find a caged child on the Capitol Lawn in a demonstration marking a year since President Donald Trump's"zero tolerance" family separation policy, which saw thousands of migrant children separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border last year.

Mendoza said the installation was the product of a joint effort by her and immigration advocacy group Families Belong Together, to ensure that those affected by the Trump administration's"zero tolerance" family separation policy would never go forgotten. While the Trump administration officially rescinded its family separation policy last year, in February, the government admitted that at least 245 family separation cases had taken place since then.

"We want to be sure that [families] know that we have not forgotten them and that the Trump administration is also clear that we will not," she said."That's one of the reasons why we did this today." “In our work on the ground, we’re seeing firsthand that children, some as young as 8 months old, are still suffering lasting trauma when they are torn from the arms of their parents and other family members," Olivares said."We must immediately put an end to 'zero tolerance' and stop criminalizing immigrants and families seeking safety in this country.”
