When it comes to women’s pain, there is so much intense shame and embarrassment. When did you begin to talk about it?

Growing up where I did, in a very small town of less than 800 people in southern Indiana—very white, very religious, very conservative—the idea of premarital sex was not something that was discussed, and if it was discussed, it was not in a positive light. It was slut-shaming or someone accidentally getting pregnant and being the talk of the town.

That’s one of those things you have to realize constantly. I haven’t been able to get to the place where I’m fully accepting of it, and I’m not sure that I ever will get to that place. I think I can only get to where I need to be each day.There’s a serious power dynamic between doctors and patients, especially chronically ill patients, because we rely so much on doctors to have any sort of pleasure in life.
