A revival of 1975’s “The Wiz” stops at D.C.’s National Theatre for the week, before a planned Broadway run this spring.
Melody A. Betts leads the company of “The Wiz” in “Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News” As the Oz-transporting tornado begins to swirl over Kansas, the ensemble is already dancing up a storm in the new Broadway-bound revival of “The Wiz.” The actors in director Schele Williams’s uneven production now at D.C.’s National Theatre — loud in every way, from the volume to the glitz — are soon singing up one, too.
The challenge for this incarnation of the 1975 musical, wrapping up a week-long pre-Broadway tryout at the National, is to make all that exuberance work more effectively by doling it out more sparingly. Charlie Smalls’s score includes other humdingers — “Home,” “Ease on Down the Road” — but not every song in this R&B update of “The Wizard of Oz” should be performed as if it’s an audition for “America’s Got Talent.
