Modern horror franchises are developing in a way that indicates the powers that be in Hollywood are finally learning from past horror failures.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The early 2020s have proven that not only is the quality of horror movies on the rise, but that Hollywood has learned from past mistakes when it comes to developing horror franchises. Over the past few decades, many iconic horror movies that have been released are originals. The best movie in the most well-known horror franchises is often the first one, as is this case in Halloween, Friday the 13th, and The Exorcist.

Horror Movie Prequels Are Finally Becoming As Popular As Sequels Two of the most universally-acclaimed horror movies from the last two years are X and Talk to Me, both of which are defined by relatively fresh concepts, smart direction and talented performances. While Hollywood typicalls follow up a successful movie with a continuation of the story, both franchises made the wise decision to go back with a prequel first.

Even the much-celebrated Saw franchise saw its initial value diluted by its bevy of sequels. As each movie's big twist hit, the universe grew more and more complicated, and without the compact simplicity of the original movie, the latter sequels were little more than a number of death traps loosely tied together. That franchise is seeking to revisit its past, with the upcoming Saw X acting as a prequel of sorts, givent that its events occur between Saw and Saw II.
