But last year, as many celebrities returned to the red carpet after a Covid-mandated hiatus, it felt like the political potential of the Met Gala was finally unleashed. Congresswoman Carolyn B Maloney – who, to be fair,wear a firefighter’s jacket to the 2019 gala in honour of a bill that she was backing – was one of the first to hit the carpet in an eye-popping gown that paid tribute to the women’s suffrage movement.
