Since the New York philanthropist died in March at age 102, rumors have swirled about the fate of her art collection, part of which will sell at Sotheby’s...
A Picasso portrait that’s part of the collection of the late New York philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau is headed to auction for an estimate of US$120 million or more, according to Sotheby’s, which is handling the sale.
Rumors about the collection—which also includes a Mark Rothko from 1958; an Andy Warhol self-portrait; and work by other contemporary artists like Agnes Martin and Glenn Ligon—have been swirling since Landau’s death, but Sotheby’s confirmed Wednesday it would be hosting the sale. The Women of Algiers , 1955, is the most expensive work by Picasso ever sold at auction, selling for $179.4 million in May 2015.
Landau, a long-time trustee of the Whitney Museum of American Art, said she was initially “devastated, … but I decided that I didn’t want the jewelry anymore. I now had seed money for a collection,” she said in an interview conducted for a Whitney catalog, “Legacy: The Emily Fisher Landau Collection.” She donated around 400 pieces to the museum in 2010.
