The brothers were killed while cycling on the dark road on Aug. 29.struck by an alleged drunken driver last summer tried to get help as motorists struggled to locate the pair on the side of the dark, rural Salem County road, according to newly-released 911 calls.The brothers were cycling on the shoulder of Route 551/Pennsville-Auburn Road in Oldmans Township around 8:19 p.m.
The trooper told Higgins to extinguish the cigarette so they could perform field sobriety tests. Higgins told the trooper he recently had surgery on his knee. The trooper then asked him if he was injured in the crash.He winced in pain as he walked along the centerline of the road, apparently because of the knee procedure. As he stood on one leg and counted for another part of the sobriety test, he paused.
After the sobriety tests, Higgins was handcuffed and read his rights. He appeared unaware of what happened to the bicyclists.“We’ll talk about that when we get to the station,” the trooper answered, before Higgins was led away to a vehicle. A crash investigation report also released Friday indicated Johnny Gaudreau was riding a Cervélo bike and Matthew was on a Trek bicycle when they were hit, though the report doesn’t indicate if they were wearing helmets.
