With Día de los Muertos right around the corner, we provide a guide for where to order...
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead,
may be overshadowed by the spooks, specters and near-unavoidable spider webs of Halloween, but the day of remembrance that begins Nov. 1 and runs into Nov. 2 is no less special in the hearts of San Antonians. Homes, offices and cemeteries across the city will play host to thousands of altars, or ofrendas, in the coming weeks where family members can leave a tribute to loved ones who have passed. And that means the city's panaderías will be extra busy baking countless loaves of pan de muerto, among the most distinctive offerings left at those altars.Pan de muerto, or bread of the dead, is often flavored with citrus zest, anise seed, orange blossom water or other ingredients.
While pan de muerto is currently available in a number of San Antonio-area panaderías, some won't begin baking it until next week, and others require orders to be placed in advance. To help you navigate all those bakeries, we've created a guide to nine area shops that will all offer pan de muerto through at least Nov. 2. Call to check for availability beyond that date.
