Orlock, Co Down Put ‘Orlock Point’ into Google Maps. Parking is off the Warren Rd at Donaghadee in the layby and you’ll see the wooden gate with the National Trust sign. This walk meanders over fields and then on tight coastal paths that split and reconnect. There are two sheltered beaches and many rare wildflowers to check out. Take a picnic and enjoy the flat rocks but beware, the sea is deep at these points, Dogs on leads. Start at Groomsport or Donaghadee.
Nugent’s Wood A gentle stroll, in sheltered trees on the edge of Strangford Lough at Portaferry. A peaceful place and great for older dogs with a flat grassed boreen and penty of spots to stop off for rest. Park near the Aquarium, walk down towards the seafront, veer right and the entrance to the woodland is behind a stone wall at the end of the row of houses. It’s easy to miss - but look again.
Gibbs Island A real adventure with a deadline and the best views. This route is accessible via a short causeway but very high tide will cut you off so plan ahead and keep an eye on the tides. Drive past Delamont Country Park and turn left down Island Road. Park at the bottom of the road, then walk through the pillars, across the causeway and onto the island.
