Letters to the Editor

The perpetrators of those nefarious acts on Sept. 11, 2001, underestimated the resilience and resolve of the American people. Our durability, our toughness, our gumption and our determination turned their day of grim, dour victory into a bitter defeat.

I was encouraged by not one but two letters in apparent rebuttal of my Sunday letter. I do think, however, the gist of my letter was misunderstood.I was by no means rendering a personal opinion equating the alleged “corruption” by Donald Trump or Joe Biden as evidenced by my use of “portrayed by” the two political parties. I was merely commenting on the sad state of our current political climate in America.

I feel this kind of respectful and contemplative discourse is a healthy pursuit and am hopeful it takes precedence over hateful, demeaning pontification so prevalent in society today.Re: “America is intended to be bipartisan — Presidential foundations nationwide rally around democratic principles,” by David J. Kramer, Thursday Opinion.

Gerrymandering has several solutions, like independent commissions and more representatives. Multi-member districts with ranked-choice voting works best, but may require a constitutional amendment.Fundraising problems are tougher. Outlaw super PACs, strictly limit or ban private fundraising and publicly fund all elections. That would require a constitutional amendment thanks to the Supreme Court ruling on Citizens United.
