The homeowners are facing potential charges as the animals were found in deplorable conditions. The rescued animals are being cared for by veterinarians and will be placed with rescue organizations.
The Colony Police Department conducted a raid on a residence in the 4,800 block of Alta Oaks Lane, seizing 88 animals and uncovering the bodies of 22 deceased animals. Sgt. James Barfield described it as a severe case of animal hoarding. Officers responded to the scene with caution due to the homeowners' history. Initially, the homeowners resisted, demanding a copy of the warrant before exiting.
However, they eventually cooperated, assisting in removing the animals and providing information about their ages and names. The rescued animals included 24 dogs of varying sizes, 45 cats, many of them kittens, 12 reptiles such as snakes, turtles, and tortoises, and seven mice. Sgt. Barfield characterized the conditions inside the house as deplorable, stating that it was one of the worst animal neglect situations he had ever encountered. Every room was filled with animals, and they were not receiving proper care. \Jennifer Rainey, a spokesperson for The Colony, explained that the sheer number of animals, coupled with their lack of spaying or neutering, resulted in a rapidly growing population. The rescued animals are currently undergoing veterinary evaluations to address their health concerns, including respiratory illnesses, congestion, and eye discharge. They will be vaccinated and spayed or neutered before being placed in temporary housing with rescue organizations. \The owners, a married couple, have ten days to present their case before a judge regarding the return of their animals. Their names are being withheld as they have not been formally charged. If the judge rules against them, they could face charges ranging from a misdemeanor to a third-degree felony. Rainey emphasized the importance of adopting animals from shelters, stating that it frees up space for animals in situations like this.
