The high demand comes just months after North Carolina became the ninth state to enact universal school choice.
North Carolina is facing demands to open more charter schools as over 85,000 students sit on waitlists to be admitted into the state's existing options.. The report notes during the 2022-23 academic year more than 145,000 students were enrolled in schools representing over 10% of the state's total enrollment.
Tom Greene, the national legislative director for nonprofit ExcelinEd, told Crisis in the Classroom one solution must be increasing the number of charter schools in the state. I don't think it's a surprise that you have families who are seeking other options," he added. "I think public schools are a critical part of any community ... but one system can't be everything for everyone."
Greene acknowledged to CITC North Carolina's government has often been at odds over school choice options. However, he feels the butting of heads piques families' interests further.
