“I feel like this is my job and my purpose now, to get people moving, no matter their age.”
She built on those results just a couple months later, earning gold in the 800 meters and 5K at the Georgia Golden Olympics in September. While she toldshe’s looking forward to medal in more races, the awards and the cheering sections are not why she laces up.“People often tell me that they’re inspired by my running, and they’re encouraged to do more to stay active because of it,” Harrison says.
She even has a presentation she gives at community centers and schools, centering on how beneficial running and exercise can be on emotional health as well as physical health. Calling it “Motion Over Commotion,” she says it emphasizes how the motion of movement takes away the commotion in your head, clearing away all those little worries and bothers of everyday life.Harrison also likes to tell her audiences that she’s a late bloomer when it comes to running.
A few years later, after the family moved to Atlanta, she started running along a path by a river there and began to build her distance. It took her three years before she could complete a mile without stopping to walk.[Want to start running?will take you through everything you need to know to get started, step by step]
So she did, for three decades. Now running 11 miles a week, she stills that “commotion” in her mind by spending her time praying for family members as she runs, particularly for an identical twin sister who has. But of course she also includes her six children, 14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.One of her sons is now a cross-country track coach, and has Harrison on a training plan. Another son buys all her running gear, and a third pays for her travel to events.
