Bill Murray with a dog in The Friend
Bill Murray made his controversial MCU debut a few years ago in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but more recently, he starred in a beloved dog drama that has become a massive streaming success. Murray stars alongside Naomi Watts and Cloé Xhauflaire in The Friend, the 2025 drama/comedy following a solitary writer who bonds with a Great Dane that belonged to a close friend, which helps her come to terms with her own past and creative life.
The Friend recently began streaming on Paramount+ in America, where the film has crept into the top 10, sitting at #4 at the time of writing. The Friend has been likened to Marley & Me, the 2008 animal drama starring Owen Wilson, largely due to the heavy presence a dog has in both films. Murray’s career has been hit or miss in later years, but The Friend is an example of the former — the film currently sits at scores of 84% from critics and 80% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. Budget information for The Friend has not been made available, but it grossed $5 million at the box office during an extremely limited run. The Friend is based on the novel of the same name by Sigrid Nunez, with Scott McGehee and David Siegel writing the script for the film. McGehee and Siegel also co-directed The Friend after previously working together on Montana Story, the contemporary Western starring Owen Teague and Haley Lu Richardson . The duo is also known for their work on What Maisie Knew, which stars Julianne Moore and Alexander Skarsgård. What Else Has Bill Murray Been in Lately? In addition to starring in The Friend, Bill Murray can also be seen in a small capacity in The Phoenician Scheme, the latest film from Wes Anderson. He also recently teamed up with Jennifer Coolidge and Ed Harris for Riff Raff, a crime comedy that’s currently streaming on Hulu. Pete Davidson can also be seen in the film. After playing the divisive Lord Krylar in Paul Rudd’s third solo Ant-Man movie, Murray even recently reprised one of his most iconic roles, Peter Venkman, in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
