Minister Ahn said, “We had extensive talks to draw up ways of cooperation in the defense field for the development of a mutually beneficial alliance,” and added, “We will announce the detailed matters as soon as the subsequent agreed document is issued.” He reiterated regarding the SCM joint statement, “We will announce it later, as the joint factsheet is being coordinated.” Hegseth said, “Once the factsheet is finalized, the SCM joint statement will be announced,” adding, “It is not that there is any difference in the two countries’ positions.” Hegseth said, “President Trump is emphasizing that allies play a major role, and in that regard, Korea is a model country.” He continued, “I was impressed that Minister Ahn spoke about increasing defense spending and mentioned growth in essential areas of military power,” and said, “We have established a fully prepared posture to win in contingencies.” On bilateral military cooperation, Hegseth said, “We shared the view of expanding not only in shipbuilding but also into the ground equipment sector,” and added, “We reached agreement to enable all warfighters to maintain the latest readiness.” The SCM is the highest-level bilateral defense body that consults on and coordinates major military policies between South Korea and the United States, and this session was the first since the inauguration of the Lee Jae-myung administration and the second Trump administration.
