Because of that, they may have to close operational services specifically at night. If the MRC is closed at night the big question is where will the migrants go. And, many officials are frustrated with the lack of planning to keep the doors open 24/7. We discovered that the cost of operation to run the MRC overnight is $80,000 and that’s just for two weeks. That information is from city manager Erik Walsh to the Mayor and city council members. We caught up with Congressman Joaquin Castro who was at an event earlier today. He’s pressing the Department of Homeland Security and others to make sure that San Antonio gets its fair share of the $650 million of federal funding that was passed two weeks ago. "Because San Antonio has really been a hub for asylum seekers who come here and then fly out often to meet family members in other cities across the country and so I want to make sure that Catholic Charities and those who are supporting the migrant resource center that they're getting reimbursed and that they're getting the money that they need to make sure that the operation is safe, that it's efficient and that it gets people to their final destination," says Rep. Joaquin Castro. District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Harda says she’s been pushing the city for weeks to have a contingency plan in place if and when federal funding runs out. She says $80,000 worth of taxpayer money can go towards much-needed city infrastructure. "$80,000 that's our streets that's our drainage, we can resurface 4 to 6 city blocks of roads with that money we can install a couple of miles of new sidewalks, we can cover the cost of landscaping, staffing at our parks there's so much we can do with that money. I think we should continue to be caring and compassionate to our migrants but I never want it to come to at the expense of San Antonians," says Councilwoman Cabello Havrda. At the current spending rate, according to city officials, the city’s funding will be exhausted by this September and Catholic Charities will exhaust funding by December if this last 650 million dollar spending bill wasn’t secured. Keep in mind, the $650 million is $150 million less than what was allocated last fiscal year. We of course will keep you updated on how much will come here to San Antonio.
