It’s been over ten years since this mind-bending sci-fi mystery series debuted on Syfy as an adaptation of the1995 film of the same name that stars Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, and Christopher Plummer.
Although the series performed averagely by critics’ standards when it premiered, it received a more consistent, favorable critical reception from its sophomore run onward. However, over the years since its conclusion, it quickly became a forgotten gem, but audiences now appear to have found renewed interest, making it the perfect binge for sci-fi fans. Created by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, the newly-trending sci-fi show is 12 Monkeys, which premiered on January 16, 2015. The first season, comprising 13 episodes, holds an approval rating of 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest of all the seasons. That eventually changed with Season 2 boasting a 92% score, while the final two seasons hold a perfect 100% each. Season 4, the final run, consists of 11 episodes, which premiered on June 15, 2018, and concluded on July 6, 2018. 12 Monkeys is a global smash on the PVOD charts as the sci-fi drama is popular on the Apple TV store in both the US and Canada. The show surfaced on the charts only two days ago as part of the top 10 most popular titles in both countries and appears to not be leaving anytime soon. Serving as the showrunner of 12 Monkeys was Natalie Chaidez during its first season. Chaidez worked closely with creators Matalas and Fickett, but stepped down for Season 2, with the creators taking over as showrunners. Meanwhile, in the third and fourth seasons, Matalas was the sole showrunner. '12 Monkeys' Is The Perfect Weekend Binge For Sci-Fi Fans As an adaptation of Willis’ classic, which itself is based on Chris Marker's 1962 French featurette La Jetée, 12 Monkeys sees a scavenger from the post-apocalyptic future, James Cole , use a dangerous, untested method of time travel to get from 2043 to the present day. Cole is on a mission to locate and rid the world of the source of a deadly virus called the Army of the 12 Monkeys that will eventually annihilate the human race. Assisting him is Dr. Cassandra Railly , a virologist who must decide whether to do harm in order to save the world, regardless of the fact that she has taken the Hippocratic oath.
