There’s nothing like a mad woman, and nobody plays one quite like Kathryn Hahn. A true master of her craft, Hahn appears to make portraying the wild, neurotic, and straight-up unhinged look effortless.
She not so much balances on the razor-thin line between captivating and cringeworthy as she does tap dance along it, able to steal any scene and draw the audience in like moths to a flame, unleashing all manner of madness with a wide-brimmed grin and a full-bellied cackle. Simply put, Hahn is a master of her craft. She brings her characters to life with infusions of madness and unbridled delight and, in turn, has thus delivered some of the most memorable performances in recent history. 8 Eleanor Horstweil 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Ah, the fabled Eleanor. After years of hearing about Charles’ deranged ex-wife, audiences finally met Eleanor in Season 3 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Nicknamed both"The Destroyer of Worlds" and"Mommy" by Charles, there was really no one else who could play Eleanor but the actress whose filmography so perfectly embodies both titles. No one does cameos quite like Brooklyn Nine-Nine. While tales of her certainly circulated throughout the precinct, they’re nothing compared to Eleanor in the flesh. She kicks the episode off by informing Boyle she plans to blackmail him with his own sperm in order to get a 90-year-old priest she hit with her car to drop his lawsuit against her. No one is more suited to play that kind of insane than Hahn, who carefully keeps Eleanor’s instability from getting too far into parody territory by tempering her with a deep, simmering rage. Claire is the current governor of Connecticut and is impressed by very little, spending much of her time sporting a look of derision as the events of the murder mystery film unfold. Hahn’s Claire is unhinged in a very different way in Glass Onion, with the insidious nature of her character’s motivations — and the stone-cold way Hahn communicates them — taking the place of that classic Hahn expressionism. Claire is unhinged in a far quieter way, which in turn perfectly portrays not only the deep-rooted corruption at the heart of her but the danger of politicians like her. After Dale punches Derek in the face, Alice comes to life. She immediately throws herself at Dale, resulting in Hahn embodying a kind of hungry, horny, slightly off-putting desperation that only she is a true expert in. Hahn gets to keep Alice at an 11 for much of the film, letting her bounce from insatiable to straight-up murderous when she gleefully proposes murdering Derek to Dale. Hahn said on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s On Me podcast that some of her most iconic lines in the film — including one where she declares she’d like to roll Reilly’s character up and stuff him somewhere quite private — were improvised. This is very much the case in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days — though, in true Hahn style, she quickly steals every scene she’s in. Her character, Michelle, works alongside Kate Hudson’s Andie at the fictional fashion magazine Composure. Hahn’s Michelle is unlucky in love and has no qualms moping about it to her friends. She’s part of the inspiration behind the titular experiment, which sees Andie copy much of Michelle’s frankly bonkers behavior in her relationships to drive her chosen guy away in 10 days. Hahn plays Michelle as weepy and meek, slowly gaining confidence over the course of the film when she sees Andie find a true chance at love with her target. It’s one of Hahn’s smaller roles, but she shines while hysterically sobbing in a floral, grandma-style nightgown. And thank god for that, because Hahn shines as Carla Dunker, a way-too-hands-off mom who finds herself falling in with some fellow disgruntled women. Hahn’s Carla truly has a devil-may-care attitude that is as hysterical to watch as it is vaguely horrifying. She’s far too relaxed as a mom and has little concept of boundaries, which is actually kind of a plus in her new friendship with Amy . In a reversal of many of her characters, Hahn has to take Carla down a few notches by the end of the film to make her a more responsible parent. Hop in an RV, of course. In We're the Millers, Hahn’s Edie Fitzgerald is an unsatisfied wife to the equally unsatisfied Don . In what feels like a staple of her roster of characters, Hahn’s Edie starts out as a relatively innocent, well-meaning woman, ratcheting up her manic laugh and wild eyes until she’s graphically describing her own genitals and sex life , informing her of her vibrator’s name and proposing she and her husband engage in a foursome with the Miller parents. Hahn plays those levels perfectly and knows exactly when to dial up the crazy, resulting in a performance that stands out as comedy gold in an already hysterically funny movie. In AppleTV+’s The Studio, Hahn doesn’t so much enter one of the show’s infamous single-take scenes as she does Kool-Aid man into them , bursting onto the screen in a whirlwind of Gen Z lingo and Burberry tube tops. Hahn’s Maya is a midlife crisis Lamborghini come to life — gaudy, flashy, and tricked out with enough accessories to camouflage the utter madness under the hood. Maya is a walking, talking hypebeast, and Hahn infuses her with the wide-eyed mania of a woman who is constantly five seconds away from either kissing you, slapping you, or snorting a line of coke off of your forehead. But underneath the TikTok-inspired 2000s fashion revivals and Stanley-sipping motormouth is a woman who is perfectly suited for her job , and Hahn revels in that dichotomy like a kid on Christmas morning. Hahn portrays Agatha as equal parts charming and angry, deftly covering up Agatha’s deep-seated grief over the loss of her and Rio’s son with a healthy layer of snarky bravado. Audiences were treated to a brief glimpse of Agatha’s underbelly in Wandavision, but it was that gleeful love for mayhem that really made viewers want more — and they got it in Agatha All Along, which sees Agatha attempt the fabled Witches' Road. Hahn’s Agatha has a harder time manipulating her chosen coven than she did Wanda, which gives her some deliciously comedic places to go in the midst of the Marvel lore. It also allows her to infuse Agatha with a sense of impatience and urgency, a strong antithesis to the Agatha who once so patiently waited out Wanda. And, of course, Hahn also gets a chance to explore Agatha’s past and her softer, romantic side when Rio flies back into her life. Hahn and Plaza’s chemistry is truly the stuff of legend.
