Pampering yourself is now more essential than ever
What’s the collective noun for an emotional slump? Whatever it is, it seemed to happen this week. Just as Britain thought it might be coming out of lockdown, the Prime Minister announced on 10 May that we’re a long way from returning to normal life. And while the disorientating sense that we’ve fallen down the rabbit hole-style is subsiding, the realisation that this is going to be a long slog is sinking in.
Rituals are by nature sacrosanct. Our small personal routines – the 8am homemade French press pot of coffee, the 8pm walk around the block to seal the day – are now a salve for unpredictability. The “act” itself – re-organising a bookshelf by colour; sieving the flour for a new bread recipe; methodically applying eye-cream – becomes a soothing affirmation that tomorrow we will find ourselves here again, repeating precisely this same ceremony.
For Sophie de Rosée, a writer with a background in psychotherapy, getting dressed is even more important now that she’s working from home and looking after three kids. “The finishing touches to my outfit vary according to how bleak the morning news has been. My favourite red lipstick is always cheering, as are a pair of beautifully sculpted earrings .”
