This class does not offer combat benefits to the characters themselves, but it is great for those who want to lean into spaceship gameplay. 7 Combat Medic One of the most well-rounded character backgrounds in Starfield is the Combat Medic. This specialization is more focused on the characters themselves, rather than the spaceship’s systems, but is a jack of all trades. Using it grants Pistol Certification, Medicine, and Wellness as the starting skills. Pistol Certification makes the player deal more damage with weapons in that category. These are hardly the best weapons in the game, but are usually the best safety layer in combat. The Medicine skill makes healing through items like med packs much more effective. Wellness is a skill that increases the character’s HP in Starfield. The Combat Medic is all about surviving, and its skills reflect that. 6 Cyber Runner Possibly the best among the character backgrounds, Cyber Runner is an option for players who want to focus on stealth and looting. This is ideal for a rogue archetype in Starfield. In fact, its first starting skill is called Stealth, which unlocks the stealth meter and allows players to move around undetected more effectively – and boosts damage with silenced weapons. The second skill is called Security, which allows the use of digipicks on more difficult locks. The third and last starting skill provided by Cyber Runner is Theft. This will enable the player to pickpocket NPCs. For players who have had experience with Skyrim and want to walk around in stealth mode, killing opponents silently, this is the equivalent archetype to follow in Starfield. 5 Diplomat Stepping away from conflict and combat, the Diplomat character background offers a different approach to the issues in Starfield. Its first starting skill is the reflection of the archetype. It is called Persuasion and grants an additional option in dialogues, which can sway the situation in the favor of the player. This is a great way of getting what is desired without having to shoot everyone in the room. Commerce is the second starting skill of Diplomat. This does not impede the characters from being heroic in Starfield, but their past reflects their starting abilities, nonetheless. 3 Ronin The best character background for a close-quarters rogue archetype is the Ronin. The first skill unlocked by it is Dueling, which makes melee weapons deal more damage against enemies in Starfield. The second ability is Stealth, which allows the player to adequately use stealth, thus decreasing the chances of them being detected. It also increases damage with silenced weapons. The last ability unlocked by Ronin is Scavenging. This starting skill grants a better chance of finding more money when looting, both from chests and bodies. This character background is ideal for scouring through bases undetected and killing opponents at a close range, all for the potential profit of credits in Starfield. 2 Soldier Soldier is the best character background if players want to double down on combat potential and resilience. The first starting skill unlocked with it is Fitness, which increases the character’s available oxygen in Starfield. The second ability is Ballistics, which will make weapons in that category deal more damage against opponents. The final starting skill provided by Soldier is Boost Pack Training, which grants access to the boost pack. This character background is much like the Bounty Hunter, but instead of the focus on spaceship combat, this archetype excels in first-person combat with regular weapons. 1 [FILE NOT FOUND] Along with the Combat Medic, the [FILE NOT FOUND] character background is one of the most well-rounded ones in the game. This curiously named archetype embraces most of the core aspects of the game and gives players a character that can survive, fight, and pilot ships, though they are less specialized. The first starting skill is Wellness, which increases their health. The second skill is Ballistics, which makes them better at dealing damage with ballistic weapons. The last skill is Piloting, which allows them to use ship thrusters and, eventually pilot better ships in Starfield. Character backgrounds only make a significant difference in the beginning, as they influence the starting skills, and the dialogue differences are minor.
