Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Players are required to choose a character background in Starfield when starting a new campaign in the game. As an RPG, developer Bethesda included a feature in which it is possible to choose a background for the player’s character, immediately giving them certain advantages to start off with.

Depending on the chosen background, for instance, a player’s character can start off with benefits that improve their shooting abilities, while others make them better pilots in space. These character backgrounds serve as a way of countering the lack of playable races. In Skyrim, for instance, Khajit tend to be better rogues, while High Elves excel at magic. With humans being the only available race in Starfield, the initial bonuses to stats come from character backgrounds. In the long run, these character backgrounds do not end up making much of a difference, as players can mold and adapt their characters as freely as they desire. Nevertheless, character backgrounds can provide substantial aid during the early portions of the action RPG, as well as a guiding line to the character’s skill development. There are over 20 options to choose from when customizing a character at the beginning of the game, each of them leaning into certain skill sets or RPG archetypes. 8 Bounty Hunter The Bounty Hunter character background is one of the best options in Starfield, especially for players who want to dive into space exploration and piloting as their core gameplay. As the name implies, the character has experience capturing targets across the universe and excels at pursuing them when they flee. By choosing this character background, players will start off with Piloting, Targeting Control Systems, and Boost Pack Training as their main skills. The Piloting skill will allow players to use thruster in the ship and, as the skill is leveled, better ships can be piloted. The Targeting Control Systems skill unlocked by the Bounty Hunter character background will allow the player to use the ship’s targeting system, making space combat much easier. The best benefit, however, is the Boost Pack Training skill, which allows the boost pack to be used immediately. This piece of gear is one of the best in the entire game and significantly impacts how exploration works in Starfield. This class does not offer combat benefits to the characters themselves, but it is great for those who want to lean into spaceship gameplay. 7 Combat Medic One of the most well-rounded character backgrounds in Starfield is the Combat Medic. This specialization is more focused on the characters themselves, rather than the spaceship’s systems, but is a jack of all trades. Using it grants Pistol Certification, Medicine, and Wellness as the starting skills. Pistol Certification makes the player deal more damage with weapons in that category. These are hardly the best weapons in the game, but are usually the best safety layer in combat. The Medicine skill makes healing through items like med packs much more effective. Wellness is a skill that increases the character’s HP in Starfield. The Combat Medic is all about surviving, and its skills reflect that. 6 Cyber Runner Possibly the best among the character backgrounds, Cyber Runner is an option for players who want to focus on stealth and looting. This is ideal for a rogue archetype in Starfield. In fact, its first starting skill is called Stealth, which unlocks the stealth meter and allows players to move around undetected more effectively – and boosts damage with silenced weapons. The second skill is called Security, which allows the use of digipicks on more difficult locks. The third and last starting skill provided by Cyber Runner is Theft. This will enable the player to pickpocket NPCs. For players who have had experience with Skyrim and want to walk around in stealth mode, killing opponents silently, this is the equivalent archetype to follow in Starfield. 5 Diplomat Stepping away from conflict and combat, the Diplomat character background offers a different approach to the issues in Starfield. Its first starting skill is the reflection of the archetype. It is called Persuasion and grants an additional option in dialogues, which can sway the situation in the favor of the player. This is a great way of getting what is desired without having to shoot everyone in the room. Commerce is the second starting skill of Diplomat. This will allow the character to get discounts from several vendors, as well as get more money from items sold to them. The last skill in this character build is Wellness, which increases the character's HP. This archetype in Starfield avoids conflicts, but the Wellness skill gives an advantage to them when combat cannot be avoided. 4 Gangster If players want to lean into a more brutish archetype, then the Gangster character background in Starfield may be the best. One of its starting skills is Shotgun Certification. This ability will enhance the damage dealt by shotguns. The next skill is Boxing, which improves the damage dealt by melee damage – it also makes the players consume less oxygen. The last skill is Theft, which will unlock the ability to pickpocket. In essence, the Gangster character background is good for close-range combat and the occasional looting, all of which befit a criminal’s lifestyle. This does not impede the characters from being heroic in Starfield, but their past reflects their starting abilities, nonetheless. 3 Ronin The best character background for a close-quarters rogue archetype is the Ronin. The first skill unlocked by it is Dueling, which makes melee weapons deal more damage against enemies in Starfield. The second ability is Stealth, which allows the player to adequately use stealth, thus decreasing the chances of them being detected. It also increases damage with silenced weapons. The last ability unlocked by Ronin is Scavenging. This starting skill grants a better chance of finding more money when looting, both from chests and bodies. This character background is ideal for scouring through bases undetected and killing opponents at a close range, all for the potential profit of credits in Starfield. 2 Soldier Soldier is the best character background if players want to double down on combat potential and resilience. The first starting skill unlocked with it is Fitness, which increases the character’s available oxygen in Starfield. The second ability is Ballistics, which will make weapons in that category deal more damage against opponents. The final starting skill provided by Soldier is Boost Pack Training, which grants access to the boost pack. This character background is much like the Bounty Hunter, but instead of the focus on spaceship combat, this archetype excels in first-person combat with regular weapons. 1 [FILE NOT FOUND] Along with the Combat Medic, the [FILE NOT FOUND] character background is one of the most well-rounded ones in the game. This curiously named archetype embraces most of the core aspects of the game and gives players a character that can survive, fight, and pilot ships, though they are less specialized. The first starting skill is Wellness, which increases their health. The second skill is Ballistics, which makes them better at dealing damage with ballistic weapons. The last skill is Piloting, which allows them to use ship thrusters and, eventually pilot better ships in Starfield. [FILE NOT FOUND] is a generalist character background to choose, but a safe one that ensures the player will have some sort of advantage in each of the main aspects of the game, even if they do not dive into a specific archetype from regular RPGs. Character backgrounds only make a significant difference in the beginning, as they influence the starting skills, and the dialogue differences are minor. As such, players should choose the one with the skills more aligned with their plans for their character in Starfield.
