Powerball lottery tickets are shown, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2023, in Surfside, Fla. Here we go again. Sounds like a broken record, but the winning numbers for a huge Powerball jackpot have been drawn. The jackpot stands at an estimated $1.
2 billion paid over 30 years, or a cash value of $551.7 million if you’re lucky enough to have that choice. A grand prize winner will need a lot of luck. The odds of winning are terrible: 1 in 292.2 million. There are 292.2 million possible number combinations. In fact, in Monday's drawing, players chose just over 20% of those possible combinations, which means nearly 80% of the possible combinations were not selected. Some more fun facts: State lotteries immediately deduct 24% of jackpot winnings for federal taxes, and there may be more to pay at filing time. State taxes vary. Grand prize winners pay taxes where they bought the ticket, which is not necessarily where they live. Wednesday night’s jackpot was the seventh-largest lottery prize. That’s up from Monday night’s jackpot, which only made it to ninth place. Powerball drawings are held Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights at 10:59 p.m. ET and they take place at the Florida Lottery in Tallahassee. Note: People also usually buy more tickets on Saturdays, which increases the chance of a winner for those drawings. Powerball is played in 45 states as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Powerball is not played in Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.
