A 76-year-old South African model sparked debate by suggesting people who can't afford to raise children should 'just suck it up and have them anyway'.
It’s no secret that having a kid is wildly expensive. Keeping a person alive for 18 years takes love and perseverance and patience, but it also takes a lot of money. It’s understandable that this is one of the reasons that fewer people are having children these days. But maybe what those people need to hear is that there’s a 76-year-old South African model who thinks they should just do it anyway.
Would that change their minds? What if I told them she was on Sunday to discuss, among other things, how people should just suck it up and have kids. When asked about her thoughts on people who feel that they can’t afford to raise children, Maye reiterated a point she had made “When I had my children, we were in a two-bedroom, small apartment overlooking a garage. And then, the next year, I had the second child, we had an apartment with a view, and then by the third child, we could get a two-bedroom house, and you just, you know, as you move on, you start doing better and better,” she told host Rachel Campos-Duffy. Then she delivered a fabulous piece of advice: “You don’t have to go to the movies, you don’t have to go out for dinner; you can just spend time with the most wonderful gifts you can ever have, is the children.” Damn, I bet all those people who aren’t having children hadn’t considered that. It was the movie budget that was taking up all the money for child care, and eventually, the man in the relationship would just start making more money. This is sort of like how millennials didn’t realize they could all be buying houses if they just stopped eating avocado toast. Did that also work out?
