President Lee expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Hun for the Cambodian government’s efforts, saying, “Koreans are very sensitive right now because of the recent scam crimes, and I sincerely thank the Cambodian authorities for their special consideration toward our citizens.” In response, Hun said, “I offer my deepest condolences over the recent death of a Korean college student.” According to presidential spokesperson Kang Yoo-jung, the two leaders met earlier that day at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and agreed to begin operating the Korea Task Force in Cambodia from November. President Lee also suggested that, in light of improved public security conditions in Cambodia and the upcoming launch of the task force, the government could consider lowering the travel advisory level for Phnom Penh and other regions currently under a special travel warning. The Korea Task Force will allow law enforcement authorities from both countries to jointly investigate and crack down on crimes. The size of the Korean police deployment and specific operational details will be finalized soon, Kang said. When asked about differences from the “Korea Desk” established in the Philippines, Kang explained, “It’s difficult to say they’re the same,” but added that “Korean police officers will be dispatched and directly participate in the operation of the team.” At the start of the meeting, President Lee said, “On behalf of the Korean people, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the warm hospitality shown to the Korean delegation during their recent visit.” Following the death of a Korean student who was reportedly tortured in Cambodia, President Lee had earlier dispatched a joint government response team led by Vice Foreign Minister Kim Ji-na to Phnom Penh. Prime Minister Hun met with the team on October 16 to discuss ways to resolve the case. Hun also said in his opening remarks, “It was a tragic incident in which a Korean college student recently lost his life. I extend my heartfelt condolences.” He added, “The Cambodian police acted swiftly to investigate and arrest the suspect, and we are cooperating with Korea to track down those involved in scam operations.” The two leaders also discussed ways to expand bilateral exchanges between Korea and Cambodia. “Korea and Cambodia have a very special relationship,” Lee said. “I appreciate Cambodia’s special consideration for our citizens, and I hope this will mark a new stage of cooperation between our two countries.” Hun responded, “Korea ranks high among Cambodia’s investors and tourist sources, and many Cambodian workers are active in Korea, which shows our growing people-to-people ties. I also want to thank the Korean government for its continued support for Cambodia’s national development.”
