Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoors remarks come as the Indian Defence Ministry is on the verge of clearing (or has recently advanced toward clearing) a proposal to procure 114 additional Rafale fighter jets under the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) progra

Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor on Wednesday said the Rafale fighter jets were the hero of Operation Sindoor and confirmed that the Indian Air Force is looking to induct more multi-role fighter aircraft.

He added that a final decision on the type of aircraft, whether Rafale or another model, is yet to be taken.Rafale was definitely the hero during Operation Sindoor. Indian Air Force is looking forward to inducting more MRFA , which is going to be Rafale or any other, which are under deliberations, and a concrete decision has yet to be taken, Air Marshal Kapoor said.Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoors remarks come as the Indian Defence Ministry is on the verge of clearing a massive Rs 3.25 lakh crore proposal to procure 114 additional Rafale fighter jets under the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft programme. This statement aligns with ongoing deliberations for the MRFA tender, potentially favoring more Rafales , ahead of or coinciding with French President Emmanuel Macrons visit to India, boosting the IAFs squadron strength following the jets proven role in the recent conflict. But Air Marshal Kapoors remarks also come as people express shock over the Rafales cost and his hint that the IAF is eyeing more multi-role fighters may point to something else entirely. As per reports, India and France are about to finalize a deal for 114 Rafale fighter jets worth $35–36 billion . At the time, many were shocked and questioned why India was buying such expensive Rafales. After all, an F-35 costs around $350 million fully loaded with missiles, while a Rafale for India would run $300–310 million.Buying 114 Rafales at such a price, but how will spending $40 billion from a $90 billion budget hit indigenous programs like Tejas Mark 2, ATAGS, and other projects aimed at making India self-reliant and a future superpower? Now, you might think: maybe India is buying more than 114 jets, so the amount increased. That’s a misconception. We’re still getting 114 jets, and the higher cost is purely due to price escalation per aircraft.
