West Africa’s largest internet cable operator, Angola Cables, claims that 70 percent of the internet and data traffic that flows in and out of the African continent flows through its spanning cable network, either on land or undersea. Faria says that many hyperscalers, content providers and other carriers have been using the South Atlantic configuration of the SACS, Monet and WACS cables as a convenient redundancy option to connect to destinations in the USA and the UK and Europe using EllaLink, which has affected traffic handled by Angola Cables.
