BALANGA CITY: As the Holy Week approaches, the seven historical Catholic churches in Bataan warm up for the expected influx of tourists and pilgrims who take part in the traditional Visita Iglesia, Lakbay Dasal and the Stations of the Cross.

The seven pilgrim churches can be easily found being located adjacent to MacArthur Highway. The churches also have one thing in common — its walls are made from the sturdy bricks known as batong silyar. The first pilgrim church after the Layac Junction in Dinalupihan is the 266-year-old Saint Peter de Varona Church in the town of Hermosa. Like most old Catholic churches, it is near the town plaza and the municipal hall. The Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish Church in Orani is next.

It is presently undergoing minor renovation to expose the original color of the bricks on its walls, but is expected to be finished in time for the Holy Week. The oldest church in Bataan, the 434-year old Sto. Domingo Church, is in Abucay town. It houses the first printing press used by Filipino printer Tomas Pinpin. After Abucay is Balanga City where the picturesque Cathedral Shrine Parish of Saint Joseph can be found.
