Blue light is everywhere, and it's the only light that passes through the cornea and lens of your eye all the way to your retina. Unfortunately, blue light is most notably emitted from screens. So if you're looking at a computer, phone, or tablet, for extended period of time, you're being exposed to high amounts of blue light. Blue light isn’t just limited to screens, though: This type of light also comes from sunlight, which is why the sky looks blue.
But experts stress that, while blue light glasses have their use, they aren’t a magical tool that will solve all your eye problems. Many people develop eye issues like dry eye and eye strain when they’re in front of a screen because they don’t blink enough, says Sunir J. Garg, M.D., Blue light glasses may help you get a better night’s sleep, says Garg. “For some folks, exposing themselves to intense blue light at nighttime can screw up their internal clock,” he says. “That can mess up certain people’s sleep-wake cycles. There may be some advantage to people using blue light glasses at night if they’re having trouble sleeping.”
