You can probably find a doughnut store on nearly any corner. But we want to point you to some of especially beloved ones.

You can thank the Salvation Army for creating Donut Day in 1938. The inspiration came over 20 years earlier, in 1917, when a group of Donut Lassies handed out sweet treats to soldiers in France during World War I. The mission continued during the Great Depression and into today. The Salvation Army of North Texas furthered that cause by serving healthcare workers at Dallas-area hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic. You can celebrate by eating a sweet pastry, too.

This shop also sells pretty, specialty doughnuts that tend to be beloved among little kids who want to dive face-first into a circle of sprinkles. The shop also sells more mature options, such as a cream cheese doughnut topped with berries.. When Hurts Donut opened in Frisco in 2017, lines were out the door. Colorful, iced treats were all over Instagram and even on the evening news.

Part of Hurts’ appeal is its hours: It’s open 24 hours a day — or “25 hours a day” if you ask its owners — 365 days a year. “We don’t even close on Christmas,” owner Kas Clegg tells us. There’s a shop in Fort Worth now, too., but it’s still serving its artisan doughnuts in East Dallas. You can find classics here like glazed and blueberry cake, but the signature doughnuts make this place stand out. Try the Canadian Healthcare, a long john with maple frosting and a slice of bacon.
