At least 7 people were killed, at least two dozen injured and 158 vehicles damaged in a series of at least three 'crash clusters' on I-55 in extremely dense fog.
MANCHAC, La. — Seven people were killed, at least two dozen injured and 158 vehicles were damaged in a series of at least three"crash clusters" on I-55 in an extremely dense fog that left visibility near zero Monday morning.
I-55 remained closed as of 8 p.m. as crews tried to get the damaged vehicles off the roadway. State Police said it would remain closed until at least midday Tuesday as the span needs to be inspected for possible damage from the fires and that has to be done during daylight hours. I-10 reopened around 3 p.m. as well. It had earlier been closed to allow emergency responders and tow trucks access to the wreck scene.
Social media videos and posts showed near-zero visibility in some areas and another image showed a major vehicle fire. The extremely low visibility was attributed to a phenomenon called Super Fog, which is a mixture of smoke and fog with visibility at or lower than 10 feet.
