“Full disclosure: When I picked this out, I was definitely in the mood for a read-in-one-shot thriller, but I was a little wary of the plot. On first glance, it seemed like it could just be a rip-off of—a teenager, Maggie, is kidnapped, held captive in a small bunker, and forced to give birth to the children of her assailant.
But that’s wherediverges. Because once each of Maggie’s sons turns three, the kidnapper takes them away and refuses to tell Maggie what he did to them. So with seven days left until the third birthday of her third son, Max, the clock is ticking and the tension is rising, as Maggie knows what’s coming but doesn’t have the resources to stop it from happening. It’s a race against time in the bleakest of circumstances, and the author does a phenomenal job of ramping up the dread as the days check off. There’s not a lot of whodunit mystery here—the story alternates between present day in the bunker from Maggie’s point of view, and life outside through the eyes of family and law enforcement—so read it for the atmosphere instead. It’s a fast-paced, emotional ride that’ll not only have you rooting for Maggie and her son, but also for the devastated family she left behind.” —
